Flip a light switch and instantly you can see. But most of us never give electricity a second thought. Turn the key in your car and a controlled explosion allows you to drive at unthinkable speeds. Yet many of us never stop to think about the power under the hood unless it fails to deliver the way we want.
Touch the trigger of your favorite hunting rifle and watch as your next meal hits the ground. The power that is harnessed in that firearm brings a lot of joy, yet we take it for granted. Put spurs to the side of a fast horse and watch out, you are in for the ride of your life.
Electricity, cars, guns and fast horses; all these things can be exhilarating in their own ways. Unique to themselves they still have a common thread--you. You have to flip the switch, turn the key, pull the trigger, and sink the spurs. Without you it remains dark, the car sits idle, the rifle stays on the rack and the horse remains in the barn.
Prayer is like that as well…We have at our access the ear of none other than God Himself. The Power that created the heavens and earth has asked us to bring to Him our greatest needs. The commander of angels is ready to dispatch the entire host with answers to your prayers if only you will ask. Think with me for just a moment what happens when we pray.
We talk to God, He hears us.
We share our hearts, He cares.
We ask for God to give us our desires, He determines whether we can handle it.
We ask for healing, He determines how best to do that.
We tell Him that life has fallen to pieces, He picks them up.
We talk to Him about the path we are on, He offers another one.
We talk to Him about the good things in our life, God smiles.
We share the funny things, heaven laughs with us.
We share the hurtful things, the Holy Spirit provides the salve that makes it better.
We talk about our failures, Jesus tells us to try harder next time.
We tell God we are lonely, He grabs our hand and sits besides us.
We share the tug of war of life and God becomes our anchor man.
We tell, share, talk and ask. We pray and God responds. But until you ask, Heaven remains silent. The Bible is full of commands on issues like this. “You have not because you ask not.” “Ask and it will be given to you.” “Seek and you will find.” “Knock and the door will open.” “When you pray,” each quote a heartfelt request from God for the two of you to talk. Each one an open door, an invitation to Heaven’s gate, but you have to walk through it, open the invitation and allow God to respond to your heart. I’ve come to the conclusion that a lot of prayers go unanswered because they go unasked. Talk to God, my friend. He is waiting.
